Holy crap am I glad to be back on my own couch in New York City. The flight home was uneventful and relatively painless for Heather. Bonus: We had an empty seat in which to stretch out (not a lot of travelers going from Seattle to NYC on a Tuesday afternoon, apparently). Stretchin’ room makes [...]

The last few days here have been very quiet, and that’s a good thing. Heather is feeling better every day. Between bouts as attentive nurse maid, I have been relaxing, playing “Uncharted 2,” and wrestling with two very energetic little boys. Because Heather’s doctor insisted that her post-op evaluation not happen until the 15th, we’ll [...]

Heather is safe and well in her home away from home. There’s not much else to report other than I am happy to have her back.

While hanging out with the Thompson children this afternoon, I noticed that Ben has an amusing speech affectation—he flips cause and effect. For example: I was playing the opening chapter of “Uncharted 2,” wherein Nathan Drake awakens in a wrecked train car, dazed and bloodied. It’s humbling how helpless you can feel when someone you love is in pain. I spent most of the day in the hospital with Heather. It was not particularly joyful or eventful, but I needed to be with her. I hope she needed to be with me. As she did her best to eat and [...]

Zero hour, 7 A.M. This is earlier than anyone should be awake. Especially after only about four-and-a-half hours of restless sleep. We left a little late and traffic was unusually heavy, but we checked in only a few minutes after our scheduled time. The woman at surgery reception is annoyingly chipper and full of weird, [...]

Heather and I have a myriad things in common, but the one that’s immediately relevant is our tendency to get VERY grumpy when our blood sugar is low. Given the fact that her doctor disallowed anything but clear liquids for 24 hours, starting today at 6 A.M., I thought for sure today would be a [...]

Ben, age 4, came into the kitchen wearing nothing but a t-shirt. Naked from the waist down, he politely bid me a good morning, and I did my best to act like everyone takes their Honey Nut Cheerios in the nude. It was really too early for me to care either way. We got to [...]

This is the calm before the storm. So far, things are business as usual as our trips to the Pacific Northwest go: Papa Murphy’s pizza, hugs from the Thompson boys, sleepily watching YouTube clips on Doug’s giant Panasonic Viera HDTV. It’s a little before noon now, PST. Naomi and Heather are out getting haircuts, Doug [...]
