Seattle Kidney Trip – Day 6

While hanging out with the Thompson children this afternoon, I noticed that Ben has an amusing speech affectation—he flips cause and effect. For example: I was playing the opening chapter of “Uncharted 2,” wherein Nathan Drake awakens in a wrecked train car, dazed and bloodied. Ben’s account was “That’s why the train crashed because you’re bloody.” So, in Ben’s world, an action’s consequence is actually its cause. We’re hungry because we eat. We’re happy because we laugh. We’re sleepy because we’re in bed.

Heather called to say goodnight at around 8:45. She sounded a little more like herself. I asked if it was because she was getting better, or if they had her pumped full of drugs. Or both. She said “I think I am just getting used to it.” With luck, she will be doing well enough tomorrow to be discharged. I look forward to hearing Ben say “Heather is better because she came home!” Any way you flip it, it’s true.

I don’t know; there’s logic to me in Ben’s statements. Bed does make me sleepy. Laughing does make me happy. I think he’s on to something. :) I hope the patient is doing better and that she gets to come home today. Send my love.
