Seattle Kidney Trip – Day 3
Heather and I have a myriad things in common, but the one that’s immediately relevant is our tendency to get VERY grumpy when our blood sugar is low. Given the fact that her doctor disallowed anything but clear liquids for 24 hours, starting today at 6 A.M., I thought for sure today would be a blood bath. I am happy to report that I was wrong. Despite what I can only imagine was mind-bending hunger, Hez remained in the best of spirits, and we had a fun day driving around Seattle, completing various errands. I’m sure if the tables were turned—if I were the hungry one—she would not be able to report the same happy ending.
Concerned queries and well wishes streamed in from friends throughout the day. I’m thankful that Heather has such a vast network of people who care so very much about her. Now, it’s T-minus 11 hours until surgery and I find myself still in a state of relative calm. Will I feel different when I am sitting in that waiting room, filling my own head with imaginative fiction about what’s happening in the O.R.? Maybe. My goal is to distract myself with books and the internet. Let us all pray for Heather and Dede, surgical competence, and a reliable wi-fi connection.
